I'm very concerned that in the media that I listen to, which is mostly public broadcasting and Democracy Now, I hear so little discussion of opposing viewpoints about vaccination. Actually, I hear none. Any reference to those who oppose vaccines is always made disparagingly. Opponents are said to be against truth and science.
I have spent my adult life using and defending alternative medicine as a parent, a patient, a worker in a health store, and the sister of an MD who knows big pharma and the AMA are corrupt, yet participates in the bullying suppression of alternative ideas, claiming they are unscientific. I find it difficult to write this, because this big and otherwise smart brother has yelled at me so many times over this issue.
Our ability to gather in person to discuss our concerns may be one of the most vital losses that we have experienced. This has also slowed understanding of the nuances of the virus's and vaccination's effects. While this slowed the pandemic at the time, if new mutations become as mild as the seasonal flu, we should not need general lockdowns. In many cases, the collateral damage is worse than the virus itself. This is not the black plague, Ebola, or smallpox. If we don’t push back soon, and harder (much push back is already happening), we may be faced with something like a worldwide vaccine mandate or treating the unvaccinated like untouchables.
The mainstream narrative is that people opposed to the vaccines are against science. Implying that all scientists support vaccines, and if they don't, they are not practicing real science. A common statement is “no scientific evidence exists to support…” My response is, that they usually have not done the research that would qualify them to make that statement. Many alternative cures have been verified by good studies.
There are many ways to increase one's resistance to severe disease, by using health food and supplements, taking care of one's mental health, seeing friends, having fun, and exercise. Certainly quarantining people who have active symptoms is wise, but quarantining everyone can create health damage as bad as, or worse than, the virus itself, especially if it is now milder. A direction to go as we move forward would be giving people better access to affordable basic foods instead of all this substandard stuff. Also shoring up regenerative agriculture, which gets vitamins and minerals back into our depleted soils and foods. We could prepare for a more disease resistant future instead of one so dependent on shots and drugs.
It is about time more progressive people stand up to be counted as protesting things like vaccine passports. Up until now, the loudest voices seem to be coming from conservatives and Trumpists, who rightly point out the loss of liberties which are involved, yet who do not seem to be giving enough attention to the fact that, yes, it is a serious illness. It can appear that their objections are foolish. I think Democrats need to get serious about this. Many people are extremely opposed to taking covid shots, and it's getting to the point where governments need to decide whether to back down or to get heavy about it.
I have been told that getting people to eat health food is impractical. This is largely because of a massive advertising campaign to ridicule the whole thing and of course to dismiss it. The public is largely kept in the dark about news like the enormous recent increase in our knowledge of gut bacteria and its importance in health. Also, people still do not realize that many diet sodas promote weight retention. That fried foods and margarines clog arteries. Sugar is everywhere, as is alcohol, both connected to so many health problems. These kinds of simple facts are not common knowledge! Any push for vaccination should be accompanied with the appeal for people to take better care of their overall health. How would they like a law against desserts? That would increase people's immunities!
What works for me, may not work for other people who do not have such a strict diet, or a physical constitution which, I'm referring to mine, simply does better with alternative than with mainstream medicine. I am just a layperson speaking out for people’s rights to use alternative medical protections against the virus. I think that those approaches, if done right, can act, and are acting, to boost immunity from the virus as well as or better than vaccines. I am aware of the statistics, more deaths among unvaccinated, but that has not separated out people who aggressively pursue healthy practices in diet, herbs, and mental and physical exercise. Again, this is just my opinion. Please note: I am not advising people whether or not to get the vaccines. Nor am I claiming that if you eat healthy, you won't get sick or die from covid. I am simply advocating for a place at the table for more protection with a powerful, different approach.
I hope that this winter will be one when we can make some inroads into new ways of doing things. If you want to do something about a problem, talking to people about it will help. If they get angry, try nonviolent communication techniques. This is something we should not be afraid to do. We have to get beyond operating from fear. We need to talk to one another, and to do so without blowing up. The more light is thrown on the situation, the better.
